A passion for integrating te reo M\u0101ori into her work as a nurse has enriched Victoria Richmond\u2019s connections with patients and her own personal growth.<\/p>

She was fortunate earlier in her career to have guidance on te reo M\u0101ori from an equity for M\u0101ori group.<\/p>

\u201cThe group educated me in the basics, like pronunciation and what was important to M\u0101ori clients, like getting to know someone and where they\u2019re from. The little things that make a big difference,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0she says.<\/p>

When Victoria started work at a private clinic in Te Whanganui-a-Tara, she continued building on her foundations by enrolling in\u00a0Papa Reo<\/a>,<\/strong> an online programme with Te W\u0101nanga o Aotearoa.<\/p>

For her, the focus is not just about learning a language, it’s about deepening her cultural competencies and despite her busy schedule the flexibility of the online programme allows her to do so.<\/p>

\u201cThat was the drawcard for me because with juggling work and home life, the ability to revisit exercises and catch up on missed tutorials have been crucial for my progress,\u201d\u00a0<\/em>she explains.<\/p>

Whether M\u0101ori or not, Victoria believes it\u2019s important for all industries in Aotearoa to embrace and incorporate te ao M\u0101ori, especially in the health sector.<\/p>

She\u2019s realised that knowing more te reo M\u0101ori has helped her build rapport with patients and kaimahi.<\/p>

Victoria listens to podcasts, uses the programme resources and borrows dual-language books from the school library to help reinforce her learning.<\/p>

She especially loves the programme resources, saying,\u201cwe use the flash cards at home, they\u2019re awesome to improve vocabulary. I get bilingual books out to read with the kids. It\u2019s made bedtime a learning journey for both of us.\u201d<\/em><\/p>

Her advice to others is simple,\u00a0\u201cdon\u2019t be afraid to give it a go, and share what you\u2019re learning along the way.\u201d<\/em><\/p>

\u201cThe tutorials make a big difference. I\u2019ve found the kaiaromatawai helpful and their lessons well-coordinated. You can sit and learn all you want on a device but the real effective way to cement your learning is sharing with others,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0Victoria says.<\/p>

By taking steps to learn te reo M\u0101ori in a way that works for her busy life, Victoria is working to bridge cultural divides and be a better nurse.<\/p>
