I\u2019m a M\u0101ori, but I grew up very p\u0101keh\u0101, and I didn\u2019t know any (reo M\u0101ori). I remember being at a noho marae in the Navy. I was expected to know and understand, but I couldn\u2019t. It was a traumatic experience that I carried with me. But my cousin, who I\u2019m very close with, studied and picked it up quite quick. I thought, if she can do it, then I can.\u201d<\/em><\/p><p>Now in his fifth year, studying\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.twoa.ac.nz\/nga-akoranga-our-programmes\/te-reo-maori-maori-language\/te-pinakitanga-ki-te-reo-kairangi\">Te P\u012bnakitanga ki te Reo Kairangi Level 7<\/a><\/strong>, he\u2019s quietly proud of how far he\u2019s come and how far his ripples of learning have extended. His wife is enrolled in her second year (<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.twoa.ac.nz\/nga-akoranga-our-programmes\/te-reo-maori-maori-language\/certificate-in-te-putaketanga\">Te P\u016btaketanga o te Reo Level 4<\/a><\/strong>), and their tamariki are learning alongside them both.<\/p><p><em>\u201cMy kids are learning too. I can give them instructions and they pick it up. I never thought we\u2019d be able to speak M\u0101ori at home. Even little instructional things, if it\u2019s not right, it\u2019s the matter of trying.\u201d<\/em><\/p><p>Ruebin\u2019s new passion for reo M\u0101ori has led him to host reo sessions at home every Sunday, where friends and wh\u0101nau gather to w\u0101nanga. He can gently guide them with their sentence structures and pronunciation.<\/p><p>Some are also studying with Te W\u0101nanga o Aotearoa, following sparks of curiosity when Ruebin began to learn and converse more. He wants them all to have the same proficiency as him so they can spread their knowledge like he has.<\/p><p>His learning extends into his mahi as well. His reo M\u0101ori has been embraced, and he\u2019s become a leader in M\u0101oritanga, helping with translations, teaching others about suitable karakia and holistic models, and speaking at p\u014dwhiri and whakatau. He has even passed on his skillset to his clients, allowing them to whaik\u014drero while he supports them.<\/p><p>Ruebin has attended classes at the T\u016bk\u0101rere campus in Tauranga and is grateful for each kaiako he\u2019s had throughout his journey.<\/p><p><em>\u201cDifferent teaching styles is what you want. You don\u2019t want the same. They are in that teaching position for a reason; there are always gems inside their teaching, even if it is not your learning style.\u201d<\/em><\/p><p>He intends to continue his reo journey, hoping to enrol in<a href=\"https:\/\/www.twoa.ac.nz\/nga-akoranga-our-programmes\/te-reo-maori-maori-language\/te-tohu-paerua-o-te-reo-kairangi\">\u00a0<strong>Te Tohu Paerua o Te Reo Kairangi Level 9<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0in 2025.<\/p><p>He understands now that if he hadn\u2019t enrolled in 2020, he would be lost or just chasing the money in a capitalist world.<\/p><p><em>\u201cI\u2019m happier and more settled. You can get lost growing up, but I know who I am now. I realise I was missing much of my holistic self, but learning reo has filled my whare tapawh\u0101. It humbles you and brings you back down to earth.\u201d<\/em><\/p><p>Ruebin knows first-hand that stepping into a classroom and admitting you don\u2019t know what you\u2019re up to can be scary as an adult. But he discovered that by making class attendance a non-negotiable, his reo improved quickly.<\/p><p><em>\u201cThe days I don\u2019t want to come are when I learn the most. Everybody around here wants you to thrive; sometimes, the only person holding you back is yourself. It\u2019s a safe space.
