The much-loved kaum\u0101tua is now in his fourth year of study at Te W\u0101nanga o Aotearoa.<\/p><p>To add to his achievements, he is the 2023 recipient of the T\u0101ne Taylor Award, receiving $3000 to go towards his studies. He was initially nominated by his moko, Elizabeth Kingi.<\/p><p><em>\u201cIt\u2019s an absolute privilege studying alongside my papa. He\u2019s an inspiration with how hard working he is. This journey has uplifted his mana and the ripple effect has uplifted our wh\u0101nau and other tauira,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0says Elizabeth who began her studies with her p\u0101p\u0101, Rangi in 2020.<\/p><p>Rangi grew up in an era where speakers of te reo M\u0101ori were punished. This resulted in him losing his reo, the language he was brought up speaking at home.<\/p><p>At 79, he enrolled in\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.twoa.ac.nz\/nga-akoranga-our-programmes\/maori-and-indigenous-development\/te-whainga-o-te-ao-tikanga\">Te Wh\u0101inga o te Ao Tikanga<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0with Elizabeth and began his journey to claim back the reo that he had always been proud of but was once afraid of speaking.<\/p><p><em>\u201cWhen p\u0101p\u0101 stood in our tikanga class to introduce himself, he had a piece of paper in his hand with his pepeha written down and his hands were shaking. I\u2019d never seen him like that. It was a combination of not having his reo and the impact of being punished at school for speaking te reo M\u0101ori. Now he\u2019s in an educational environment all these years later and we are encouraging him to speak reo M\u0101ori.\u201d<\/em><\/p><p>Rangi and Elizabeth have since completed two te reo M\u0101ori programmes with Te Wananga o Aotearoa,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.twoa.ac.nz\/nga-akoranga-our-programmes\/te-reo-maori-maori-language\/certificate-in-te-ara-reo-maori-level-1-and-2\"><strong>He P\u012b ka Pao<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.twoa.ac.nz\/nga-akoranga-our-programmes\/te-reo-maori-maori-language\/certificate-in-te-putaketanga\">Te P\u016btaketanga o te Reo<\/a><\/strong>. Now at 82, Rangi is studying\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.twoa.ac.nz\/nga-akoranga-our-programmes\/te-reo-maori-maori-language\/te-ronakitanga-ki-te-reo-kairangi\">Te R\u014dnakitanga ki te Reo Kairangi (level 5)<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>with Elizabeth and her husband, who has been inspired to join them both on the journey.<\/p><p>With 6 children, 27 mokopuna and 43 great grandchildren, Rangi already has a big wh\u0101nau, but he has also made a whole new wh\u0101nau amongst the many tauira he has met and studied alongside.<\/p><p><em>\u201cWith p\u0101p\u0101 being on this journey it has changed the dynamic of our wh\u0101nau because everybody is immensely proud of him. His k\u014drero is; every class he\u2019s in, he gains a whole new set of mokopuna.\u201d<\/em><\/p><p>Rangi reluctantly submitted his own scholarship application after being encouraged by kaimahi of Te W\u0101nanga o Aotearoa. In his application he says,\u00a0<em>\u201cas a pensioner, I like to think that studying is keeping me young and keeps my mind active.\u201d<\/em><\/p><p>With the money that Rangi will receive through the T\u0101ne Taylor Award, he hopes to purchase a new laptop, some printer ink, extra tutoring, and petrol to travel to study groups, all helping him continue to thrive in his studies.<\/p><p><em>\u201cP\u0101p\u0101 doesn\u2019t use his age as an excuse, he views himself like all other tauira.
