{"id":3512,"date":"2023-05-03T10:09:07","date_gmt":"2023-05-03T10:09:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mahuru-maori-twoa-ac-nz.azurewebsites.net\/?p=3512"},"modified":"2023-09-04T01:18:37","modified_gmt":"2023-09-04T01:18:37","slug":"working-towards-a-greater-aotearoa-by-learning-reo-maori","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mahuru-maori-twoa-ac-nz.azurewebsites.net\/mao\/working-towards-a-greater-aotearoa-by-learning-reo-maori\/","title":{"rendered":"Working towards a greater Aotearoa by learning reo M\u0101ori"},"content":{"rendered":"<div data-elementor-type=\"wp-post\" data-elementor-id=\"3512\" class=\"elementor elementor-3512\" data-elementor-post-type=\"post\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-07fdcbe elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"07fdcbe\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-a2c7166\" data-id=\"a2c7166\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-659f088 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"659f088\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Mum of two, Kimberley Cleland is taking what she has learnt from her reo M\u0101ori studies through Te W\u0101nanga o Aotearoa and passing it on to her young tamariki (children).<\/p><p>Kimberley believes that if more people learn reo M\u0101ori, understand and respect te ao M\u0101ori (the M\u0101ori worldview) and revitalise the language, then Aotearoa as a whole will be better off.<\/p><p>\u201cI want my children to grow up understanding te ao M\u0101ori, tikanga and te reo because I think if all of those things thrive in New Zealand, then we will all thrive as well.\u201d<\/p><p>The Tauranga local completed\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.twoa.ac.nz\/nga-akoranga-our-programmes\/te-reo-maori-maori-language\/te-ronakitanga-ki-te-reo-kairangi\">Te R\u014dnakitanga ki te Reo Kairangi<\/a><\/strong>, level 5 programme in 2022 and is now studying the\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.twoa.ac.nz\/nga-akoranga-our-programmes\/te-reo-maori-maori-language\/te-aupikitanga-ki-te-reo-kairangi\">level 6 Diploma in Te Aupikitanga ki te Reo Kairangi<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p><p>Kimberley appreciates that studying with Te W\u0101nanga o Aotearoa hasn\u2019t just been a basic journey of learning a language but she has also learnt about tikanga, te ao M\u0101ori and the history of te reo.<\/p><p>\u201cOur kaiako (tutor), Rauangi challenged us to think deeply about things, not just the language, but why the language will thrive through revitalisation and some of the causes and impacts around what might be getting in the way of that.\u201d<\/p><p>Not being of M\u0101ori decent meant that Kimberley felt extremely privileged to be studying the language while also facing some feelings of being whakam\u0101 (shy) when it came to studying reo M\u0101ori.<\/p><p>\u201cAs a P\u0101keh\u0101, I was always aware of not wanting to take up the space of somebody who has whakapapa (genealogy) and support others in their journey without detracting from their own reclamation and learning. Our journeys are so different because of the impacts of colonisation in Aotearoa.\u201d<\/p><p>Thankfully the environment at Te W\u0101nanga o Aotearoa and the classroom setting that was created by Rauangi made Kimberley want to learn more, both inside and outside of the classroom.<\/p><p>\u201cWhen you start the programme, you get to know people and you slowly become friends, but by the end of the year you are wh\u0101nau and I think that is totally down to the study approach that Te W\u0101nanga o Aotearoa has.\u201d<\/p><p>Kimberley hopes to see more people who live in Aotearoa study and celebrate te ao Maori no matter their background.<\/p><p>\u201cRauangi made us feel like there was a place for everyone to learn and that there is a place for everyone to respectfully be involved in the revitalisation of the language.
