But after learning she would be taught by one of her former students, things became more relaxed.<\/p><p>Deborah has taught biology at \u014cp\u014dtiki\u2019s local secondary school for 40 years, so making the switch from teacher to tauira (student) was quite a big change.<\/p><p>\u201cMy teachers (Maxine Tai and Tracy Gilmer) were so encouraging. As an older person it\u2019s quite scary but they were so kind and had such great teaching skills,\u201d\u00a0says 62-year-old Deborah who last year completed\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.twoa.ac.nz\/nga-akoranga-our-programmes\/te-reo-maori-maori-language\/certificate-in-te-ara-reo-maori-level-3-and-4\">Te Ara Reo M\u0101ori (He P\u012b Ka Rere) level 3 and 4<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>at the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.twoa.ac.nz\/nga-rohe-our-location\/waiariki-bay-of-plenty\/opotiki\">Te W\u0101nanga o Aotearoa campus in \u014cp\u014dtiki.<\/a><\/strong><\/p><p>After living in \u014cp\u014dtiki for most of her life, Deborah thought that she would have been able to learn te reo through listening to the many fluent speakers in the community.<\/p><p>But in 2021 she accepted that she was going to have to make a deliberate effort to learn and she decided to enrol in\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.twoa.ac.nz\/nga-akoranga-our-programmes\/te-reo-maori-maori-language\/certificate-in-te-ara-reo-maori-level-1-and-2\">Te Ara Reo M\u0101ori (He P\u012b ka Pao) level 1 and 2<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>at Te W\u0101nanga o Aotearoa.<\/p><p>\u201cI thought that now is finally the time. We had a group of about eight teachers who signed up at the same time and we all did it together. It was so fun and it was great learning.\u201d<\/p><p>Studying reo M\u0101ori was about more than just learning a new language for Deborah, she also came away from the programme with a new understanding of te ao M\u0101ori (the M\u0101ori worldview) and how that could be incorporated in her own classroom.<\/p><p>\u201cI teach the classification of plants but now I start with the whakapapa of the plants and I go back to T\u0101ne and how the trees are all connected. I\u2019ve been amazed at the added value my learning has had in my class.\u201d<\/p><p>&#8220;I feel confident to read and listen for basic te reo M\u0101ori but I still need to grow my ability to whakahoki (respond) more quickly.
