We had always talked about learning te reo so I went down to the W\u0101nanga and signed up,\u201d says Linda.<\/p><p>Piripi has links to Ng\u0101ti Porou but says he grew up in a P\u0101keh\u0101 world and Linda is of Irish and English decent, so learning te reo M\u0101ori was something very new to the both of them.<\/p><p>They both admit that learning has been a struggle at times but they were determined to stick at it and have since completed the level one, two, three and four te reo M\u0101ori programmes at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.twoa.ac.nz\/nga-rohe-our-location\/waiariki-bay-of-plenty\/opotiki\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Te W\u0101nanga o Aotearoa\u2019s (TWoA) \u014cp\u014dtiki campus<\/a>.<\/p><p>\u201cWe have never done anything like this in our lives so at times it has been a bit over our heads but we persisted. We still can\u2019t speak te reo the best but we understand a lot more than we first did,\u201d says Linda.<\/p><p>Both Piripi and Linda agree that they still have a long way to go on their learning journey but it\u2019s the little things and the small steps they have made that make them proud.<\/p><p>\u201cIt\u2019s going down the road and saying m\u014drena instead of good morning or gidday and we are always getting more confident,\u201d says Piripi who hopes to one day be able to go into his local shops and korero M\u0101ori.<\/p><p>The couple\u2019s grandson has also started learning te reo at high school and they hope to one day be able to k\u014drero M\u0101ori with him as well as their other adult children and grandchildren.<\/p><p>But for now, Piripi and Linda will continue on their learning journey together at TWoA and hope to see others in their community start their own te reo M\u0101ori journey as well.<\/p><p>\u201cWe have become part of the wh\u0101nau and that was really important to us. Now we can walk down the street and people will say hello to us.
