{"id":2819,"date":"2021-11-17T03:17:55","date_gmt":"2021-11-17T03:17:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.mahurumaori.com\/?p=2819"},"modified":"2021-11-25T03:21:14","modified_gmt":"2021-11-25T03:21:14","slug":"te-reo-makes-successful-return-to-russell","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mahuru-maori-twoa-ac-nz.azurewebsites.net\/mao\/te-reo-makes-successful-return-to-russell\/","title":{"rendered":"Te reo makes successful return to Russell"},"content":{"rendered":"<div data-elementor-type=\"wp-post\" data-elementor-id=\"2819\" class=\"elementor elementor-2819\" data-elementor-post-type=\"post\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-cc5657c elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"cc5657c\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-a5a311d\" data-id=\"a5a311d\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-ffd2b49 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"ffd2b49\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>The first te reo M\u0101ori course to be held in Russell in eight years has been dubbed a resounding success, despite the impacts of COVID-19 forcing tauira into an unfamiliar online learning environment.\u00a0<\/p><p>The Te W\u0101nanga o Aotearoa Te Ara Reo M\u0101ori Level 2 programme was offered in Russell this year after strong interest from the community, which saw close to 60 people registering for the 38-week programme.<\/p><p>Among them was former Prime Minister Dame Jenny Shipley and her husband Burton, pictured above, who says until COVID-19 made its presence felt, the course was \u201chighly successful\u201d.<\/p><p>\u201cI think it\u2019s a fair reflection to say the first part of the year was exceptionally good, really well supported and interesting,\u201d he says.<\/p><p>\u201cThe interaction with our kaiako Abe (Aperehama Kopa) and kaiawhina Haare (Haunui) was unbelievably good.\u201d<\/p><p>However, once COVID-19 forced classes online, some tauira became a bit frustrated with using Zoom.<\/p><p>\u201cI\u2019ve talked to a few people and they say it lost a bit of its magic,\u201d he says.<\/p><p>\u201cOften, when we were face-to-face, someone would ask a question, and then someone else would go, \u2018well, if that means that, what does this mean?\u2019 The next thing you know, you were five questions down the line with a whole lot of interplay and everybody was really enthused.<\/p><p>\u201cOn Zoom, it tended to be one question and I think that has frustrated some people.\u201d<\/p><p>However, Burton says that had nothing to do with their tutors, who were both \u201creally talented teachers\u201d.<\/p><p>\u201cWe absolutely loved the interaction and having them here. The magic that can occur when you\u2019re face to face, Hari and Abe are special people,\u201d he says.<\/p><p>\u201cThe style of teaching is different to what most of us are used to and that unsettled some people but everyone has learned heaps. Some have learned the language more, while for others it\u2019s been learning more about the culture.<\/p><p>\u201cIt\u2019s given us all a huge amount of confidence and that\u2019s really special to me. My knowledge of te reo is miles better than it ever has been. I\u2019m more confident with my pronunciation, I can now look at some words and know how it should sound, I\u2019m rolling the Rs, it\u2019s a heck of a lot better than it ever was.\u201d<\/p><p>He says the overnight noho marae at Mokau Marae had also been invaluable as many on the course had never stayed on a marae before.<\/p><p>\u201cWe are much more aware of the culture \u2013 not sitting on tables and that sort of thing &#8211; and different forms of speaking, like on the marae.
