When and why did you make the decision to speak only te reo M\u0101ori for the month?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>

Kua mahia e au p\u0113nei i ng\u0101 tau e rua kua hipa mai. Ko t\u0113nei te w\u0101 tuatoru. I whakatau au i t\u0113r\u0101 tau, ka p\u012brangi au ki te mahi an\u014d. Ko te kaupapa kei te wh\u0101ia e au, ko Mahuru M\u0101ori. Ko te p\u016btake o Mahuru M\u0101ori te whakarauoratanga o te reo M\u0101ori. Ko te tikanga me k\u014drero reo M\u0101ori anake m\u014d te roanga o te marama o Mahuru.<\/p>

I have done this for the previous two years, this is my third year. I decided last year that I wanted to do it again this year. The kaupapa that I am following is called Mahuru M\u0101ori. The main goal of Mahuru M\u0101ori is the revitalisation of te reo M\u0101ori and how it does that is by people choosing to only speak M\u0101ori for the whole of September.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

What has the month been like so far?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>

N\u014d reira ko te nuinga o ng\u0101 t\u0101ngata k\u014drero ai au, e whakaae ana ki t\u014dku nei mahi.<\/p>

It’s been good, the responses I have received have been better than last year. Because I’ve done it before a lot of people understand what I’m doing, so what happens is those people that don’t really agree with what I’m doing tend to just avoid me. Therefore the majority of the people I talk to are supportive.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

How do you work around talking to non te reo speakers at school?<\/strong><\/p>

I allow myself to write in English. One of my M\u0101ori teachers gave me a small whiteboard from her classroom, so when someone really can’t understand me I will write what I’m saying. I carry this with me all around school.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Do you have friends at school who are also fluent?<\/strong><\/p>

There are a few at school that are fluent, but none of my close friends that I hang out with out of school.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

What other barriers have you come up against?<\/strong><\/p>

Some people just don’t want to try to understand me and they cut me off and tell me to just write it down. It’s also difficult to express my thoughts sometimes. In one classroom we are learning about the treaty, which is something I think is very important and I would normally be active in giving my thoughts. But it’s more difficult to express myself in a way where people can understand me. It’s also just more difficult to have a conversation with someone.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

I’ve had a very positive response. Lots of people are very supportive and tell me how strong I am to do this. Because I’ve done this before, most of the people that talk to me are really positive. I have a bus driver that speaks M\u0101ori, on one of the public buses, not the school bus. But she speaks M\u0101ori to everyone all year around anyhow.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

What has been the most difficult aspect? How have you found conversing in shops etc?<\/strong><\/p>

A really difficult thing is trying to talk to people when they can’t understand. I try to change what I’m saying so it’s easier to understand. If I can get them to understand the context of what I’m saying, they can get closer to understanding what I’m trying to say, even if they don’t understand the words I’m using. It’s also a bit frustrating when I give people a card that explains what I’m doing, along with what I’m trying to say written in English on a bit of paper, they will often ignore what’s coming out of my mouth and not even try to engage.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Tell me about your te reo M\u0101ori journey? When did you begin learning the language?<\/strong><\/p>

Ko te reo t\u014dku reo tuatahi. I haere au ki t\u0113tahi Puna Reo, k\u0101tahi ka haere au ki t\u0113tahi kura kaupapa M\u0101ori. I te w\u0101 i hunuku ki Whakat\u016b, i haere au ki Te Pouahi ki Te Kura Pokap\u016b o Whakat\u016b m\u014d haurua o te tau. Whai muri i t\u0113n\u0101 i uru au ki roto i ng\u0101 akomanga auraki.<\/p>

Te reo is my first language. I went to a Puna Reo, a M\u0101ori pre-school, and then from there to a full immersion Kura Kaupapa M\u0101ori. When we shifted to Nelson I spent half a year in the bi-lingual unit Te Pouahi at Nelson Central. Since then all of my classrooms have been mainstream.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Tell me about your heritage, your iwi and important role models in your life?<\/strong><\/p>

He uri au n\u014d Ng\u0101ti R\u0101rua, Rangit\u0101ne, Ng\u0101ti Kuia me Ng\u0101ti Apa ki te R\u0101 T\u014d. Ko t\u014dku P\u0101p\u0101 t\u0113tahi kua mahi kaha ki te ako i te reo M\u0101ori, kia whakaako i ahau, kia akiaki i ahau, kia whakanui i t\u014dku taha M\u0101ori hoki.<\/p>

I am from Ng\u0101ti R\u0101rua, Rangit\u0101ne, Ng\u0101ti Kuia and Ng\u0101ti Apa ki te R\u0101 T\u014d. My father taught himself te reo M\u0101ori so that he could teach me, to encourage me and to make sure I understand how important my M\u0101ori heritage is.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Why is it important that te reo is preserved and celebrated?<\/strong><\/p>

Ko te reo M\u0101ori te reo t\u016bturu o Aotearoa, n\u014d reira ka tika te whakanui i a ia ki runga i t\u014dna whenua. Ko te reo te mauri o te mana M\u0101ori.<\/p>

M\u0101ori is the original language of this land, so it is appropriate that we celebrate it here in Aotearoa. I’ll finish with a whakatauk\u012b.
